Hear children's mental health experts share insights

15th June 2020| In the news

Dr Jack Lewis, Kim S Golding and Dr Suzanne Zeedyk will be giving a series of live webinars in June and July, organised by Thrive, which trains teachers and other education professionals to support children's mental and emotional well-being.

Thrive® was established more than 25 years ago to provide the tools, skills and insights needed to help children to become more emotionally resilient.

Initially conceived as a way of tackling the issue of school exclusions, the Thrive Approach is a systematic method of identifying gaps in children's emotional and social development so that the adults around them can help them to progress and engage with education and with life.

The four founders of Thrive - Jan Banks, Roe Lovelock, Julia Bird and Lynne Tarrab-Snooks - have backgrounds in teaching, education, social work and psychotherapy and have underpinned the approach with a framework of neuroscience, attachment theory and child development research.

Thrive-Online® consists of a web-based assessment and monitoring tool, and training for adults working with young people. To date, more than 34,000 staff have received Thrive training, taking the approach to 4,000 children.

Every year, it holds a series of conferences, with keynote speakers from experts in the field of children's mental health, called Forging New Connections. This year, because of the coronavirus pandemic, these conferences are taking place online, meaning that more places are available for anyone interested in this important area to 'attend'.

This summer's conferences will feature Dr Jack Lewis, Kim S Golding and Dr Suzanne Zeedyk. Dr Jack Lewis has a PhD in neuroscience and is a respected author, broadcaster and consultant on the subject. Kim S Golding is a is a clinical psychologist and author and Dr Suzanne Zeedyk is a research scientist who is fascinated by babies' innate capacity to connect. They will be covering topics such as resilience, connection, attachment and trauma, exploring how the latest scientific theories can be translated into everyday practice.

The webinars can be used as CPD points for Thrive Licensed Practitioners® and will give those working in education, health and social care, as well as parents and carers, an insight into how to develop strong bonds with children and how to respond to any distressed behaviour they may show.
