Working with Children who are Adopted or in Long-term Foster Care
A one CPD day course to help Thrive Practitioners understand emotional turbulence that many adopted and long-term fostered children manage daily and how to support them in school.
This course helps you to better meet the specific needs and difficulties presented by children in adopted and long-term foster families, alongside celebrating their individuality and unique spark. It considers how early life experiences and inevitable movements between families mould patterns of attachment and affects subsequent relationships with staff in school.
This course will:
link with learning in Licensed Practitioner's training, particularly developmental interruptions and brain science (impact of separation, anxiety, loss and grief) and explore additional strategies and activities to support the children
consider the 'attachment years' (0-3) and likely effect of early trauma on their readiness to engage with learning and their management of planned and unplanned changes
appreciate the struggle many of the children have with making friends and sustaining friendships
emphasise the particular importance of schools building strong working alliances with adoptive and long-term foster parents and together enjoy the children and their achievements.
Suitable for: Those working with all age groups
Open to: Licensed Practitioners or above
