Does your favourite upbeat track fill you with optimism? Or a soothing song help you relax at the end of a busy day?
Music can have a huge impact on the way you feel. It can motivate, captivate, comfort, calm - and everything in between.
One of the many benefits of listening to music is that it can help to reduce stress. Introducing music into the classroom can create a positive environment for children and young people to learn.
The benefits of a classroom playlist
According to the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments, music can:
- Improve learning and increase positive classroom atmosphere
- Impact how the brain processes information
- Improve young people's ability to communicate with others
- Reduce aggressive behaviour and feelings of anxiety and stress
Viv Trask-Hall, Head of Innovation in Education and Principal Trainer at Thrive, recommends creating a classroom playlist each term with music voted for by your pupils.
This can help create a sense of belonging and ensure children and young people feel welcomed and part of the group. This activity is embedded into our Thrive-Online activities and can be used with different age groups.
