The catch-up premium is a one-off grant available for all state-funded mainstream and special schools, and alternative provision aimed at tackling the impact of lost teaching time during the Covid-19 pandemic. Schools that have used the catch-up premium to support the Thrive Approach® tell us that it has helped children, staff and senior leaders to meet the funding criteria including:
- Thrive has provided effective tools and strategies to promote mental wellbeing and emotional resilience, helping children to overcome barriers to learning and to adjust to the return of classroom-based learning.
- The Thrive-Online® (TOL) assessment and progress review tool can be used for reporting purposes on an individual, class and whole-school basis. This demonstrates the impact of spending in relation to Thrive training and the cost of the software licence. Reports are quick and easy to produce and can also be used to evidence progress for Ofsted and pupil premium funding.
- Thrive offers a structured training programme for staff which is based on neuroscience, child development and attachment theory which leads to a recognised qualification.
Funding allocations are calculated on a per pupil basis, providing each mainstream school with a total of £80 for each pupil from reception to Year 11. Special, alternative provision and hospital schools will be provided with £240 for each place for the 2020 to 2021 academic year.
Government guidance notes suggest that headteachers read an Education Endowment Foundation document. These set out examples of effective approaches that schools could take in order to help them decide how to allocate this funding. This document makes it clear that need should not just be assessed against attainment criteria, saying: “Interventions might focus on other aspects of learning, such as behaviour or pupils’ social and emotional needs….”
For a single school with 200 pupils, an annual Thrive-Online subscription equates to less than 5 per cent of the catch-up premium. For this single fee, the school is able to:
- Carry out whole-class screening for emotional and social development need for every class in the school.
- Develop a class based, early intervention plan to accommodate all children and especially those working just below age related expectations.
- Provide individual, in-depth assessments and action plans for those children identified as needing additional support.
- Monitor progress and use the Thrive-Online measures of emotional and social development against other school data such as classroom disruption and academic attainment.

PUPIL PREMIUM GRANT
The pupil premium is additional funding given to publicly-funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. Schools that have used the pupil premium grant to support the Thrive Approach tell us that it has helped children, staff and senior leadership teams in many ways that meet the funding criteria including:
- Thrive has provided an effective, early intervention tool that evidences incremental progress made by children, helping them to overcome barriers to learning (evidence for Ofsted and pupil premium)
- The Thrive-Online assessment and progress review tool provides direct and clear evidence of the child’s progress and of the impact of the spending in relation to Thrive training and the cost of the software licence. The outcomes of the Thrive case reviews can also be mapped against key school data to enhance the evidence base (evidence for Ofsted, pupil premium and to inform School Development Plan)
- It offers a structured training programme for staff which directly increases the effectiveness of intervention. Evidence in the EEF/Sutton Trust document shows that, for example, the positive impact of the deployment of teaching assistants is greatly-increased when a structured approach is implemented.
From April 2020 schools get:
£1,345 for every primary age pupil, or £955 for every secondary age pupil, who claims free school meals, or who has claimed free school meals in the last six years.
£2,345 for every pupil who has left local authority care through adoption, a special guardianship order or child arrangements order.
Eligible schools include: local authority maintained schools, academies and free schools, voluntary aided schools and non-maintained special schools. School leaders can decide how to spend the pupil premium as they are best-placed to assess their pupils’ needs and use funding to improve attainment.
For a single school with 200 pupils, the annual software licence for Thrive-Online equates to approximately half of one single pupil premium. For this single fee, the school is able to:
- carry out whole-class screening for emotional and social development need for every class in the school
- develop a class based, early intervention plan to accommodate all children and especially those working just below age related expectations
- provide individual, in-depth assessments and action plans for those children identified as needing additional support
- monitor progress and use the Thrive-Online measures of emotional and social development against other school data such as classroom disruption and academic attainment.

FUNDING FOR WALES
Schools in Wales are benefitting from £29 million of government funding to provide additional human resources to support the most vulnerable pupils to get back on track after interruptions caused by Covid-19.
Guidance notes identify that the funding can be used to provide support which will enable pupils to be emotionally ready to progress in their learning again, saying: “…the most disengaged learners will need coaching and emotional support as well as support for examination preparation and skills.”

OTHER FUNDING STREAMS
- Clinical commissioning groups and local authorities can access Future in Mind funding to pay for improvements to children and young people’s mental health. There are regional and local funds also available through charitable trusts, local authorities and clinical commissioning groups.
- Crowd Funding provides another route for raising funds from people and businesses willing to support their local school and their community.
