What you'll learn

This course builds on the foundation of your Thrive Licensed Trainer training for Childhood, deepening your understanding of adolescent development.

You will explore:

  • How the brain and body develop during the adolescent years, including the increased sensitivity of the amygdala and changes in the frontal cortex, and how these changes can impact a young person’s stress regulation systems and emotional resilience.

  • The sub-strands of entering, exploring, practising and securing interdependence, and how these principles help practitioners connect with and support young people effectively.

  • How to use cognitive strategies such as lending your thinking brain, Captain Thinking, and shining a light to promote right-time development.

  • Ways to use play, creativity, and the arts to strengthen emotional resilience within adolescent practice.

  • How to use Thrive-Online to enhance work with young people, including access to a wide range of strategies and activities tailored to this age group.

Course structure

The e-learning should take around 2 hours to complete.

The course is made up of 9 e-learning modules:

Module 1: The neuroscience and theory during adolescence

Module 2: Practicing Thrive at adolescence

Module 3: The developmental model at adolescence

Module 4: Working reparatively at adolescence

Module 5: How play creativity and the arts support social and emotional development at adolescence

Module 6 Understanding the core emotions at adolescence

Module 7: Key strategies to support development

Module 8: Supporting staff, parents and carers

Module 9: Using Thrive-Online at adolescence

Each module is completed independently meaning you can work at your own pace. You will work through the 9 interactive e-learning modules and then complete a quiz at the end. You will need to score an 80% pass mark and have a developmental conversation to successfully achieve Adolescence Licensed Trainer status.

The developmental conversion session is led by one of our senior trainers and is designed to help you understand the different delivery approaches used at the adolescent phase. It will support you in guiding practitioners on how to apply their knowledge within an adolescent practice context. You will also have dedicated time to ask any questions related to delivering training at this stage.
