Olivia Hennessey and Lisa Kelly, from Perry Wood Primary and Nursery School, in Worcester, used the Thrive Approach to support children’s emotional wellbeing during the pandemic and after they returned to school. As a result, relationships between staff and pupils are stronger than ever and the school can evidence the impact of its approach to wellbeing for future Ofsted inspections and other stakeholders.

The biggest difference we have observed so far in our journey with Thrive is that truancy levels have dropped dramatically. We have seen children who used to either leave the site or spend most of the day hiding in the toilets seeking out Thrive practitioners to have a discussion about why they are having problems.

The children love their Thrive sessions and it’s something that definitely works. Thrive has helped the wellbeing of our school grow, we have seen amazing effects on our children and nothing gives us greater joy than knowing how we have turned some of our pupils’ lives around with the Thrive Approach.

Our pupils are more resilient now as a result of Thrive and this will mean that their grades will increase. Thrive is teaching them empathy and to take on another person’s point of view, which has helped their window of tolerance to grow.

After Thrive was introduced at school, we started to notice that the language that was being used was changing, especially amongst support staff. It had a real ripple effect where the staff that hadn't had their Thrive training were curious about what was going on because they had heard from colleagues how effective it was.

We have a number of children who struggle to come into school in the morning so we have made good use of our Thrive room to help them. Children spend 15 minutes in the morning accessing sensory-type resources before moving on to their classrooms.

Thrive has helped our students to feel listened to during what’s been a difficult time for everyone. I have found that by attuning to them and their needs, they go home and they feel that someone has listened to them. That’s made a massive difference.

I cannot stress enough the value of The Thrive Approach in the short term. We have experienced a cultural shift in a matter of weeks, and I am extremely curious to see if the improved emotional regulation of the children has a positive impact on their attainment as we move through the year.

One thing that happened immediately for us was the unsafe behaviour we were seeing from children and the high level of crisis situations decreased dramatically. Other changes have taken longer but I look at it now and can see just how far we have come as a school in a relatively short space of time.

We are saving money on teaching assistants because pupils are able to regulate their own emotions and they don’t need as much support to help them. We have found that, in the long term, using the Thrive Approach saves the school money, eg staffing and interventions.

I have had parents come into the Thrive room who are amazed when I show them the social and emotional activities that we offer here. There are parents that would sign up to the school purely because of Thrive.

Thrive has a fantastic way of showing the comparison and link between the emotional state of a child and their ability. You can see that as the child becomes more regulated through Thrive, they also improve academically, so there is a direct correlation.

Thrive has given us a common approach and a common language It has given us the knowledge of science and facts behind what we are seeing in the children’s behaviour. Everyone can buy into it and when you get that buy in, that is when things change. We have proved that it works - it absolutely has.

The benefits of Thrive have been huge. We have a really broad range of children in the setting with children from really stable family backgrounds through to children who are in child protection. I find that creating a really special relationship is key to everything.
