What you'll learn

During the course, we’ll explore some of the emotional reasons why children and young people avoid school and the impact of this on them and their parents/carers. We’ll also look at how to identify children and young people at risk of avoiding school so that you can intervene early.

Next, we’ll explore ways to tackle emotional-based school avoidance, including how to create a sense of emotional safety in your school so that children and young people want to attend, practical strategies to use once a child or young person has stopped attending and adjustments that you can put in place to better meet their needs when they return to school. We will also look at ways to support parents and carers so that you can work together to get their children and young people back into school.
