As adults we are quick to notice issues and find the right solutions to choose to resolve them. We must equip the children and young people in our settings to be able to do this independently however often we step in and tell children what it is they need to do next and why. Supporting children and young people to develop their own robust cognitive regulation skills as part of their stress regulation system will ensure that with they are equipped to find solutions to problems when things go wrong. This will lead them to be able to make more appropriate choices in behaviour and to be able to calm and soothe themselves because they can think through what they need to do next to stay regulated.
