“Thrive is a constant reminder about how important it is to know about neuroscience and how children’s brains are developing. What we do here really is shaping children’s futures.”

Elizabeth Leer. Deputy Headteacher and Senco, Rothesay Nursery School.

What you'll learn

Cognitive flexibility is one of the eight executive function skills, and research shows it is a stronger predictor of academic achievement than IQ. It is the skill that allows children and young people to shift their thinking, see things from more than one perspective, tolerate uncertainty and adapt when things don't go to plan. It plays a central role in social and emotional development, shaping how children and young people manage their feelings, navigate relationships, respond to change and engage with learning.

During the session, you'll learn:

  • What cognitive flexibility is and why it matters for learning, behaviour and relationships
  • How the brain develops this skill over time
  • Why some children and young people find flexible thinking more challenging
  • How cognitive flexibility links to emotional regulation, social understanding and adaptability
  • Practical, neuroscience-informed strategies to support flexible thinking through relationships, play and everyday interactions
This session bridges theory and practice, giving you tools you can take straight back to your setting to support children, young people and colleagues.
