Overview
Created by Thrive in collaboration with the electronic music education charity Delia Derbyshire Day, this course draws inspiration from Delia Derbyshire’s pioneering work with sound.
You’ll explore how to support children and young people to experiment with rhythm and sound, make choices and notice their responses. The emphasis is on curiosity and participation, without pressure to produce a polished piece of music.
Written guidance explores the connection to regulation, your role in facilitating the activities and suggestions for using them. Two step-by-step GarageBand video demonstrations show you how to create repeating beats and soundscapes.
You’ll need GarageBand on a compatible Apple device to try the activities and use them with children and young people.

How the course works
Work through two sessions at your own pace. Each combines written guidance on supporting children’s regulation with a step-by-step GarageBand video demonstration.
Session 1: Creating repeating beats
Discover how children and young people can explore rhythm, tempo and different sounds. A 10-minute video shows you how to create beats and loops, with written guidance and reflection questions to help you plan how to support children as they experiment.
Session 2: Creating immersive sound environments
Explore how children and young people can combine water, wind, birdsong and other sounds to create their own soundscapes. A 15-minute video shows you how, alongside written guidance on encouraging choice, creativity and self-expression.
Take time to read, reflect and try the activities yourself, so you feel ready to introduce them to the children and young people you support.

This course is for education, pastoral and wellbeing staff interested in facilitating creative digital music-making activities with children and young people.
It is particularly relevant if you have access to suitable Apple devices and work with children who enjoy, or would like to explore, creating music and sound.

No. The demonstrations introduce the GarageBand steps used in each activity. The emphasis is on exploring sound and taking part, with no expectation of musical expertise.
No. You don’t need to be a Thrive School or have completed any previous Thrive training to take this course.
You’ll need GarageBand installed on a compatible Apple device to practise the activities. Children and young people will also need access to suitable devices when creating their beats and soundscapes.
You may be able to adapt the beat-making and soundscape activities for another music-making app. However, the video demonstrations use GarageBand, and we haven’t tested the activities in other apps, so the features and steps may differ.
You could introduce the activities in a planned one-to-one session or with a small group, using iPads or Mac computers with GarageBand installed. Working alongside children, you can encourage them to choose sounds, try out ideas and share what they notice.
Choose a space where children can listen comfortably, and allow time to explore the app together. Before booking, check that you’ll have access to suitable devices: GarageBand is available on Apple devices, rather than Windows laptops or Chromebooks.
The repeating beats demonstration is 10 minutes, and the immersive sound demonstration is 15 minutes. You’ll also work through written guidance and reflection, with additional time to practise the activities.
Delia Derbyshire Day is an electronic music education charity honouring the work of electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire. This course was created in collaboration with the charity and draws inspiration from her creative approach to sound.
