Overview

Thrive All-Staff Training for Secondary and Post-16 helps colleagues understand how everyday relationships, routines, communication and responses to behaviour can support young people to feel safe, connected and ready to engage.

From introducing Thrive to strengthening and extending Thrive practice across your setting, you can select the units that best meet your organisation’s priorities. Content focuses on key areas of practice and uses examples, scenarios and activities that reflect the realities of working with adolescents and young adults across secondary, sixth form, FE and post-16 contexts.

You’ll receive everything you need to deliver high-quality training in-house, including expert video content, facilitation guidance, fully scripted group activities and practical resources. Each workshop within the units helps staff reflect on their role, build shared understanding and leave with strategies they can use straight away.

How the training works

How the training works

Each 3-hour unit contains three workshops.

Each workshop includes:

  • A 25-minute recorded expert presentation
  • A 25-minute facilitated group activity
  • A facilitator guide with step-by-step instructions
  • Delegate resources, templates and supporting materials

You can choose the units that best align with your setting’s priorities and development goals. If you’re new to Thrive, we recommend starting with Unit 1: Introduction to Thrive.

Units 1-6 and unit 9 are suitable for all settings, while units 7 and 8 are designed specifically for settings with an active Thrive-Online subscription.

Facilitating the training

Facilitating the training

The training is designed to be facilitated in-house by your own team. You don’t need to be a Thrive Licensed Practitioner or have completed Thrive training to run the sessions.

The person leading the session is guided through the materials step by step, with clear prompts to support discussion, reflection and activities with staff.

With 12 months’ access, you can plan the training around your setting’s schedule, whether you deliver a full 3-hour unit in one session or work through the workshops over time.

UNIT 1: Introduction to Thrive

Recommended for schools new to Thrive.

Explore the Thrive Approach and discover how relationships, emotional safety and connection support healthy development and learning. Staff will gain an understanding of the science behind Thrive, the importance of adolescence as a period of significant development, and what Thrive looks like in everyday practice.

UNIT 2: The Thrive Relational Approach

Develop the relational skills that sit at the heart of the Thrive Approach. Staff will explore PACE, the Vital Relational Functions, attachment and emotional availability, with a focus on how everyday relationships support young people who may test, resist or push away adult connection while still needing it.

UNIT 3: The Thrive Developmental Model in Secondary and Post 16

This unit explores the Thrive Developmental Model, helping staff understand young people’s developmental needs and how these influence behaviour, learning and relationships. It helps adults to recognise social and emotional needs and respond effectively through everyday interactions, classroom practice and the learning environment.

UNIT 4: Understanding and Responding to Behaviour

Support staff to understand behaviour as communication, especially when distress is intense, socially complex or easy to misread as deliberate provocation. This unit explores distressed behaviour, overwhelm, conflict and coping, helping staff respond with curiosity, co-regulation and developmentally informed support.

UNIT 5: Supporting Emotional Development

Explore how emotional awareness, regulation and empathy continue to develop during adolescence. Staff will consider the role of sensation, co-regulation, body-based understanding, emotional vocabulary and attuned interaction in helping young people build self-awareness, social connection and emotional regulation.

UNIT 6: Creating Enabling Environments

Consider how the physical, sensory and social environment of a secondary or post-16 setting can support young people’s regulation, development and sense of belonging. Staff will explore how classrooms, corridors, common rooms, tutor time, transitions, unstructured periods and creative opportunities can be shaped to help young people feel safe, connected and ready to engage.

Support staff to understand and use Thrive-Online data in secondary and post-16 practice. This unit explores My Thrive Scan, group profiling, action plans and individual reparative and behaviour assessments, helping teams use evidence to plan support, monitor progress and communicate impact.

UNIT 8: Embedding Across the Setting

Please note: this unit requires an active Thrive-Online subscription.

Strengthen communication, consistency and shared Thrive practice across the whole setting. Staff will explore how Thrive information is shared, how adults communicate with young people, and what it takes to build a sustainable whole-setting Thrive culture in complex secondary and post-16 environments.

Support every adult in the setting to understand their own wellbeing, regulation and reflective practice. This unit explores self-awareness, proactive wellbeing and mindsight, helping staff sustain the emotional availability needed for relational practice with adolescents and young adults.

No, you don’t need to be a Thrive Licensed Practitioner to deliver the training. Each unit includes short films, facilitator packs and resources that guide you through each workshop step by step.

The majority of units are suitable for settings without a Thrive-Online subscription. However, Units 7 and 8 are designed for those with an active subscription, as they focus on using Thrive-Online data, assessments, action plans and progress monitoring to support and embed practice.

Each unit provides up to three hours of training content, which your setting can deliver at a time and pace that works for your team. The workshops include short films created by Thrive, along with facilitator packs containing clear delivery guidance, activities, fidelity checklists and reflection prompts to support implementation.

If your setting is new to Thrive, we recommend starting with Unit 1: Introduction to Thrive. This introduces the Thrive Approach, the science of safety, connection and learning, and what Thrive looks like in everyday routines, interactions and practice.
